Cationic Dyed Polyester Yarn
is a special type of polyester yarn which can be dyed with cationic dyes. It has excellent color development and fastness, making it an ideal choice for a wide range of applications.However, cationic yarn needs to be dyed at high temperature and pressure. This makes it difficult to combine it with wool, silk or other natural fibers that lose their strength and texture under these conditions.The textured yarns of the present invention are made by the draw-texturing of bicomponent filaments of spin-oriented cationic-dyeable copolyester. The cationic-dyeable copolyester filaments comprise a sheath and a core of poly[ethylene terephthalate/5-(sodium sulfo)isophthalate] containing about 2 mole % of the 5-(sodium sulfo)isophthalate groups in the polymer chain.
The sheath/core bicomponent filaments are drawn in a rotary draw-texturing machine. They are then immersed in an alkaline aqueous bath containing preferably 10 to 100 g/l of a quaternary ammonium compound and exhaust dyed for 30 to 60 minutes or longer as needed to obtain the desired depth of shade.The resulting fabric is characterized by the fiber reactive cationic compound being reacted with and bound to a relatively large amount of the hydroxyl sites in the cellulosic fibers, and the dyestuffs being distributed nonuniformly and randomly throughout the fabric in proportion to their affinity for the cationic agent. This provides the desired random heather-like appearance to the dyed fabric.

The inactive particles in the invention are preferably within the range of 0.1 to 5.0 wt% based on the total weight or normal pressure cationic dyeable polyester composition. When the inactive particles are less than 0.1 wt%, dark color stainability is insufficient; however, when they are more than 5.0 wt%, strength, heat resistance, and light resistance are unfavorably reduced.Cationic dyed polyester yarn is made from a modified polyester, such as PBT (polybutylene terephthalate).
